Vintage carved and multilayered iro urushi rose pendant on glass bead necklace. Pendant is earthy colors and measures 1 1/14" X 2 1/2". Necklace measures 22".

Iro Urushi is colored Japanese natural lacquer made by mixing mineral pigments into refined clear or translucent urushi sap.

Traditionally the color palette for iro urushi includes, red, brown, yellow, green and black.  

This is a bakelite adjacent collectible, many bakelite collectors also collect iro urushi.  You will also find bangles and rings made from this material as well as trinket boxes and paintings.  It's the same material as used on Japanese lacquerware and even chopsticks and other kitchen ware.
